AI Web Design & Frontend Skills Catalog/Choose a visual direction before you build.

Research note · 25 September 2026

Choose a visual direction before you build.

OpenAI Product Design Ideate is a conditional fit when you need three image-based directions for a new or redesigned screen before prototype work. It needs Product Design to be available, a minimum brief, relevant references, Image Gen, and a person who will select a direction. We did not run it.

Decision: Use this selection loop when the missing decision is visual direction. Do not treat generated alternatives as proof that a final interface is usable, on-brand, accessible, or implemented faithfully.

What the current source says

It is built to stop before code

The current Ideate instructions say to resolve a minimum design brief, inspect available project or visual context, generate three independent directions, and wait for the user to choose. The Product Design README routes a selected direction to image-to-code work. This is author-published workflow guidance, not a result test.

It is a plugin dependency

The inspected Product Design manifest declares version 0.1.52, but its skill source is current main rather than an immutable file pin. The official directory says availability depends on the plugin, plan, and workspace settings. Check availability before you make it part of a project plan.

When to choose it

  • Use it for: a new or redesigned screen when you can name the user, surface, goal, constraints, and visual or project references, then choose a direction before build work.
  • Choose Frontend App Builder instead: when you need its Build Web Apps concept-to-browser workflow.
  • Choose another lane: when you already have the chosen design, need project-bound feedback, need a named rendered QA loop, or need a captured-flow audit.

Audience signal

A fresh r/codex request asks how to make a non-developer's Codex web design less generic. Replies recommend tools alongside iterative direction and design basics. That supports a need for a simple visual-choice step. It does not rank the tools or prove their outcomes.

What remains unknown

The pool did not enable Product Design, test it in Codex, generate or select directions, build a prototype, or compare a result with another workflow. We also did not test whether its three directions preserve an existing design system, meet accessibility needs, or reduce rework.
