One owned URL: separate AI-search evidence from page checks
Use a small, owner-maintained evidence sheet for one authorized public URL. A page audit describes the page; platform reports describe particular appearances; analytics describes visits. None of these alone predicts whether a page will be cited after an edit.
Five evidence lanes, not one metric
| Lane | What an authorized owner can record | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Page and indexing checks | Dated fetch/rendered observations, canonical and robots controls, and a verified-property Google URL Inspection result. | Visibility or citation. A successful live test does not guarantee indexing or selection as canonical. |
| Google Search performance | Ordinary Search Console Performance page-filtered clicks and impressions for a dated range. | An AI-only click or citation count. AI feature traffic is included in Web totals; page/query filters and anonymized queries affect totals. |
| Google generative Search | The dedicated generative AI performance (Search) report shows page-level AI Overview/AI Mode impressions, where available. It rolled out worldwide by 31 August 2026. | A citation ledger, clicks, rank, answer text or all-platform reach. Low activity may hide the report; newest data can change, and export converts unavailable ~/- values to zero. Canonical assignment and chart/table totals require care. |
| Bing-supported AI answers | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance Pages view reports page-level visible citation counts and grouped grounding phrases for supported surfaces. The public-preview announcement confirms URL-level citations. | Every AI answer, exact prompts, rank or clicks. The report is aggregated/sampled, and sparse activity may be absent. |
| Visits and sampled answers | With permission and instrumentation, a GA4 landing page by session source/medium is a visit-referral proxy. A manually saved answer is one dated, contextual sighting. | No-click appearances or citation frequency. Direct/none may hide origin; Clarity notes Google AI Overview and ordinary Search share the google.com referrer. One screenshot is not stable rank. |
Minimum sheet for one URL
Record the authorized URL and its canonical mapping; page purpose and question; platform and report name; date range and timezone; URL filter and metric definition; source export or screenshot; value only when supplied; preliminary, sampling or low-volume notes; and a named SEO/site reviewer. Keep page diagnostics, Google impressions, Bing citations, search clicks, analytics visits and answer sightings in separate rows. Mark missing access unknown, not zero. Preserve Google's displayed ~/- state before export.
The site owner reviews evidence and any proposed change. Content or technical edits need separate approval and a separate measurement design. Do not request credentials, protected URLs or new tracking simply to fill the sheet. A before/after count or screenshot alone cannot attribute a change to a page edit.
What remains unknown
This is a source-and-method review, not a measurement for a property. No owned URL, report export, analytics view or sampled answer was examined. Report availability, canonical mapping, values, visit attribution and any outcome remain unknown. Google's AI-feature guidance says eligibility does not guarantee serving and links can vary. Google impressions and Bing citations use different definitions and cannot be added into a universal visibility rate.
A portable skill would be worth comparing only after repeated authorized cases expose material omissions or reviewer burden in the maintained sheet. A platform-report change by itself calls for a sheet update, not a package search.
