Google startup credits do not pay every Model Garden bill
Google says its ordinary startup Cloud credits cannot pay for third-party services or models, including Marketplace offerings. A founder using Anthropic, Mistral or AI21 through Model Garden should not assume a Google Cloud credit balance covers the model charge.
A separate Scale benefit may cover partner models
Google’s current Perks page says qualifying Scale and Scale AI members may receive USD 10,000 in separate credits for partner models in Model Garden, including Anthropic, Mistral and AI21. It tells members to contact their Google Cloud Account Executive to request access. This is not the ordinary Start credit, is not cash, and is not a guaranteed addition to every Scale award.
An older Google PDF says all new Scale members receive the partner-model credit. Because the current page uses narrower wording, do not budget it until the credit appears in your billing account. The live page does not state its expiry, country coverage or account-specific eligible charges.
Before making a model call
- Identify the exact model and billing product, not just “Google Cloud” or “Model Garden.”
- Check the credit name, balance, expiry and eligible charges in your own billing account. If a Scale member lacks the partner-model credit, ask the Google Cloud Account Executive before spending.
- Test with controlled usage and inspect the charge against the correct credit; a budget alert is not proof a charge is covered.
A March 2026 founder report describes a GBP 4,000 charge for Claude via Google Cloud Marketplace despite unused startup credits. We did not inspect the invoice or outcome. It illustrates the cost of an unchecked assumption, not how often this happens.
